Black Pearls
Recently I stumbled across a site dedicated to Black Pearl Dogs . No, not a link to a breeder of special dogs, but a very informative overview of what's been called "Black Dog Syndrome". What is BDS? BDS is the term used to describe the large number of black dogs that languish in shelters and rescues. The website addresses the many reasons thought to cause this. Every thing from folklore, fears, and the fact that black dogs are seen as to ordinary. In the Dakota's we often see large numbers of black Labradors. When you walk in to a kennel, and see 10 black dogs, and 1 golden, your eye is automatically drawn to that one that's different, as if it were more special. Those left behind black dogs are no less engaging, or unworthy, but some how they've already lost their chance to be your new best friend. I don't know if this "phenomenon" is true. If it is it's another sad way that bias affects animal rescue efforts. And if it isn't, I still know there are beautiful black dogs out there waiting for homes!
