Featured Rescue: Pit Rescue of the Great Plains
Misunderstood. Feared. Abused. The American Pit Bull Terrier is probably one of the most under appreciated animal companions out there. All of the breeds labeled as "Pit Bull" carry with them the burden of an image not their own. The stigma of being a "pit bull" owner can be more than most can handle. If you can get past what you see on the news, and the urban legends that swirl around the breed, you will find a loving, athletic, fun, family dog! Pit Rescue of the Great Plains serves south eastern South Dakota, and it's surrounding area. Staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, it depends on the kindness of donors and foster families. Dedicated to reworking the image of the APBT in their community, PRGP has a strict screening process for applicants. They utilize http://www.pbrc.net/ as their first line screening process. All applications are reviewed there first. Next a PRGP volunteer interviews the applicant. Following that, a home check visit is required, and a meet and greet with the dog of choice. A two week foster period is then recommended, and finally, finally the adoption! A moment of joy for the new family, the dog, and the entire rescue team! Most likely there will be tears, there will be promises of Christmas cards, and visits on adoption day. And then, you watch that tail wag out the door on the road to it's new home, and you know, rescue is the way to go! PRGP currently has a staff of 20+ active volunteers. They are in desperate need of new foster homes, due to the overwhelming number of abandoned Bull and Terrier mixes in their area. Potential fosters require the same screening as a new adopter.
