Pawsitive Press
The big struggle for the small rescue is getting the word out. With limited funds, how do you let people know you are out there, and what you can offer the community. The press can be a great tool for recruiting fosters, finding adopters, and generating funds. A well written press release can get you free print time in a more effective space than a costly classified. To start, finding animal friendly reporters can take you a long way. In April, Jamie Gibson of the Harrisburg Today (Harrisburg, SD) wrote a fantastic article on several area rescues. She included photos of a foster family and their dog, a side bar listing the website or Petfinder address of all of the rescues in our area, and quotes from rescuers outlining both the joy of what we do and the hardship. More recently Almost Home Canine Rescue of Madison, SD was able to get multiple sources of coverage. In the wake of taking in 37 dogs, in horrible condition, from a puppy mill auction, Almost Home was able to do a sit down interview with KDLT news (photos from the interview can be seen here) in Sioux Falls. Showing undercover footage as volunteers purchased these dogs, sometimes for only $2.00 to $5.00, and also showing the change they go through in the hands of those who care. Almost Home was then interviewed by the Madison Daily Leader. Reporter Elisa Sand was able to go in to detail the suffering these dogs were enduring up until their rescue. Her article is very, it is very eye opening. Back to what Roo Yori said at the Bully Workshop, when there is positive press out there, we have to contact the programmers, directors, writers and reporters and thank them for putting it in print and on the air. Although he was talking about Pit Bull press, the same applies to all areas of rescue. Any time you see a positive rescue story, click on the link and help drive up the site traffic. Email the reporter, their editor, and director and thank them for their hard work. Make them know people are following this type of story so more will be reported on. One small rescue alone may not be enough, but together we can make the press stand up and take notice. |
