The Rescuers!
A little known secret in animal adoption, the rescue option! Many small, non-profit, breed specific rescues can be found all across the United States. After doing your research on a what dog breed is right for your lifestyle, you may want to seek out a rescue that specializes in that breed. What is the difference between rescue and shelter? Most rescues do not have a facility (building) to house them. They often are dependent on in home foster families to care for the dogs in the rescue. Usually staffed by unpaid volunteers, and funded by in kind donations, rescues often struggle to survive. Dogs that come through rescue are often truly loved and can give that back to their adoptive family once they are found! Unlike a kenneled shelter dog, a rescue dog has been living as a family pet with his / her foster family. They are house trained, socialized and ready made! You also have the advantage of interviewing with the fosters to learn if this dog would thrive in your home. Most rescues spay/neuter the pet before it is adopted, they often microchip, and are current on vaccinations. Is there a breed that has always had your heart? Unable to adopt right now? Find that rescue that you think is doing a great job! Support them! How? Foster if you are able. Volunteer for events. Print and pass out fliers. Wear logo wear showcasing the rescue. Sponsor a dog!
